The Little Lady's 5 BIG Mistakes People Make When Moving From the Big City

By Christine Gwinnup · 2023-03-03

Hey there, future land dwellers! So, you're ready to ditch the city life and embrace your inner farmer? Well, before you jump in feet first, let's talk about the do's and don'ts of buying a home on land with a septic system and water well.

Mistake #1: Not getting the septic system inspected. Now, I know inspecting a septic system might not be the most glamorous thing in the world, but trust me, it's important. You don't want to be stuck with a stinky situation and an empty wallet because you didn't get it checked out beforehand.

Mistake #2: Not understanding how the septic system works, a septic system is not something you can just set and forget. You need to know how it works and how to maintain it, or else you might be in for a nasty surprise.

Mistake #3: Not budgeting for well maintenance. Your well is like your own personal water fountain, but it's not magic. It needs regular maintenance, just like anything else in your home. Make sure you budget for it or you might end up thirsty and broke.

Mistake #4: Not understanding water conservation. When you have your own well, you can't just turn on the tap and let it run all day. You need to be mindful of your water usage, or else you'll be out of water faster than a desert oasis.

Mistake #5: Not considering the quality of the well water. While having your own well can be convenient, it's important to have the water tested for quality. Poor water quality can lead to health issues or damage to your appliances and plumbing. So, don't forget to test the water before making the final decision.

Many agents don't work with property on acreage because they don't know the ins and outs of what to look for. If you have any questions about moving to acreage in Northern Colorado, my number is 303-709-4262.  Looking forward to helping!
